I came across the work of Tadahiro Uesugi, a Japanese illustrator mostly known for his Coraline illustrations. Unlike many other Japaneses artists his style is very distinctive as his work often depicts women set in urban settings done in a style which resembles European art from the 50's and 60's. His work is composed of simple, minimalist shapes and yet each piece has a great deal of detail and a great sense of storytelling. Be sure to check out Uesugi's site which is full of his works.
